What is coaching?

Coaching is seeding a trusted partnership with the client to unlock the unique potential that lies within them to accelerate their journey towards success, growth and fulfillment – Rachana Singh

Coaching is all about helping people get from where they are in their life to where they want to get to. It concentrates on where you are today and what you are willing to do to get where you want to be tomorrow.

How does coaching work?

Coaching is motivational, inspiring, positive, exciting and an action driven process. Coaching involves a structured process which is the key for the overall success of a coaching session. The coaching journey involves

The coach helps you unlock your true potential by overcoming your limiting beliefs, developing self-awareness, helping you experiment and practice new behaviours and celebrating results. Coaching can help you start living an extraordinary life today.

As I say ‘You know who you are but do you know who you can be!’

What is the role of a coach?

A coach is someone professionally trained and certified to help you unleash your true potential and help you achieve the results you have always desired. Rather than actually TELLING you the answers, a coach acts as the catalyst for getting you to find the answers yourself. By asking challenging and thought-provoking questions, a coach can unlock the potential in you. Sometimes you just can’t see the wood for the trees! You are so wrapped up in everyday life that indeed life just passes you by!

Well, coaching enables you to see different alternatives and to take a step back and actually examine your life and all of its component parts. This in turn leads to greater, self-awareness, self-accountability and self-actualization.

A Coach Is Your....

Do you need coaching?

If you change nothing, nothing will change

Everyone knows what to do in life to become more successful but why don’t people do anything about it or why is it that they are not able to steer forward quickly?

Most of us know what it takes to reach the goal we desire but we are unable to either think right or take the right actions to make it happen. We either sabotage ourselves by telling we are not good enough, at times there is a fear of failure or there are times when we are unable to change our existing behaviour and work patterns to develop new ones which restricts our growth journey.

If you want to lead an extraordinary life it will require you to challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone as the real growth begins there. It is important to decode what is holding you back and learn to move past the barriers to reach your destination.

All kinds of people use coaches, including business leaders, executives, managers, entrepreneurs, homemakers, collegians, professionals, sports players, actors, solopreneurs and social workers. Coaching isn’t restricted to those in crisis or those who are not achieving enough. It’s meant to help a wide variety of people, including those who are already successful.

What is expected from you as a coachee?

"If you want something you've never had, you must be willing to do something you've never done." - Thomas Jefferson

Is coaching magic? Does the coach just wave a magic wand and make everything wonderful? Sadly no, coaching involves hard work and commitment from the client. However, if you are ready for change, the benefits are enormous. As a coachee you must be willing to show up and sign-up for change. It’s OK to be afraid but is it not OK to let fear stop you. You can be more than what you are today and all you need to do is take the first step to sign-up for the transformation to begin.

One Day or Day One you need to decide.

How will I know if I am partnering with the right coach?

Coaching is a powerful tool which can help you turn your aspirations into reality. With a coach by your side, you’ll have a partner who can help you stay focused and committed to the journey and help you take your life to the next level.

The key attributes of a skilled coach include empathy, care, trust, conscious listening, effective communication, accountability, growth mindset and equality. You should look for a coach who has a different perspective than you and who can see your life from a different viewpoint. The right coach will help you develop a new lens of looking at things, will be open and transparent in sharing opinions and feedback honestly, and will be willing to challenge you and address difficult or sensitive topics.

It is important that the coach you are signing up for is certified and is a member of a professional coaching organization

Impactful coaches maintain a significant online presence, so take the opportunity to explore their websites and follow their social media handles, as it will give you a deeper understanding of their work and philosophy.

Most top coaches offer a free consultation which allows you to consider whether the match will work when you attempt to find a coach. This initial session is the time to learn everything you can about your potential coach and the coaching program they offer to determine if it’s a good match.

What does the coaching process look like?

The coaching process involves a minimum three-month engagement with the client where the session takes place on preferably once-a-week basis. The weekly session can be conducted virtually or in-person as agreed by both the client and the coach. Each weekly session typically lasts for an hour and it is important that there are no interruptions, distraction or re-scheduling of the sessions to ensure that the maximum outcome is achieved through the session.

The coach engages with the client by using the coaching tools and techniques and may give clients assignments, reflective exercises or tools to incorporate in their regular lives. The coach and the client partner on an on-going basis to observe and reflect on the individual’s progress and plan the way ahead accordingly.

What coaching is not?

Coaching is not the same thing as training, mentoring or therapy

Trainer
transfers knowledge and skills to an individual or group of individuals based on pre-determined learning objectives and the communication style is more directive.
A Mentor
provides subject matter expertise, wisdom and guidance based on their own experiences.
Therapist
is a healthcare professional who deals with healing pain, trauma, dysfunction or conflict within an individual or relationships, typically with a focus on resolving difficulties arising from one’s past that impair an individual’s emotional health in the present. Therapy focuses on improving overall psychological functioning and dealing with the present in more emotionally healthy ways.
A Coach
focuses on partnering with individuals to draw upon their own experiences and capabilities to set and reach their own objectives. A coach helps the individual self discover hidden potentials to bring about behavioural and performance change. The coach is the expert in the coaching process, but you are the expert on your life journey.
